StartBefore the first move

The starting position. White moves first, and that single tempo is the whole reason opening theory exists.

The moves in the text are buttons. Press one and the board beside it shows the position.

The idea in one paragraph

9...Nd4

In the accepted Smith-Morra Gambit, Black's queen on c7 and a knight on g4 both aim at h2, and apart from the king the only white piece guarding it is the f3-knight. When White kicks the g4-knight with the natural , attacks the e2-queen and the f3-knight at once: take on d4 and ...Qh2 is mate, move the queen and ...Nxf3+ removes the guard anyway. White's way out is , which covers d4 down the d-file and frees f1 for the king.

The pawn structure

9.Rd1

The Smith-Morra's own: White has given the c-pawn for open c- and d-files and a lead in development, and Black is a pawn up with a pawn on d7 that will not move for a while. The d-file is where White's rook belongs, which is exactly why is both the natural developing move and the antidote.

The plans

10...Nxe2+

♔ White’s plans

  • Develop fast and use the files: Nc3, Nf3, Bc4, O-O, Qe2 and a rook to d1 is the Morra set-up.
  • When a black queen and knight both aim at h2, count its guards before you touch the knight on g4. With only the f3-knight left, comes first, and then h3 is safe.
  • If you have already played and lands, take the g4-knight and give up the queen: is lost, but and are mate.

♚ Black’s plans

  • Accept the gambit and develop: ...Nc6, ...e6, ...Qc7 on the b8–h2 diagonal, ...Nf6 and ...Ng4.
  • Against , jump: forks the e2-queen and the f3-knight, the only guard on h2 apart from the king.
  • Against , the trick is gone: bring the knight back to the centre with ...Be7 and ...Nge5, castle, and enjoy the extra pawn.

Trap 2

After , the same jump loses a piece: , and the f3-knight still guards h2.

Its cousin on the other wing of the board

the Fishing Pole, where a knight on g4 is bait and the h-file opens onto a castled king.

Sicilian players who meet the Smith-Morra. It is the most famous trap in the gambit and costs Black nothing to set. And Morra players, who need to know which move order makes h3 safe.

Your learning path: The Siberian Trap

Beginner → Intermediate

One trap from both chairs: set it against the Smith-Morra as Black, and defuse it with one rook move as White.

  1. FoundationOne sitting

Goal. Spring it as Black, and never fall for it as White.

    • The set-up: ...Qc7 on the b8–h2 diagonal and ...Ng4, so that only the f3-knight guards h2.
    • The jump: 9...Nd4! against 9.h3, and the two mates it threatens.
    • From White's chair: 9.Rd1 first, then h3.
DrillDrill the trap as Black, then the sidestep as White. Then set up the position after 8...Ng4 and say which guards h2 has before choosing a move.
Common mistakePlaying ...Nd4 against 9.Rd1 out of habit. The rook takes it, and the f3-knight never has to move.
Move on whenYou can name h2's guards in the position after 8...Ng4, and the one move that adds a guard to d4.
  2. StructureAfter the Sicilian chapter

Goal. Turn the extra material into a win.

    • The deep dive: ...a6 against Nb5, ...b5 and ...Bb7, and castling before White's knights find squares.
    • What Black does against 9.Rd1: ...Be7, ...Nge5 and the trade on e5.
DrillPlay the position after 11.Bxe2 against an engine from Black's side until you can win it without giving back material.
Common mistakeGrabbing more pawns with the queen before castling. Two knights on an open board can still hunt a king in the centre.
Move on whenYou win the queen-for-two-knights position comfortably, and as White you reach the position after 13.Be3 by reflex.
