The starting position. White moves first, and that single tempo is the whole reason opening theory exists.
The Fishing Pole
The knight on g4 is the bait, the h-pawn is the hook, and the h-file it opens is the line.

The idea in one paragraph
In the Berlin, after , the move puts a knight where it does nothing. It is bait. After it is left hanging, and taking it, , opens the h-file in front of White's own castled king: the f3-knight is attacked, and after Black threatens mate on h2 with the h8-rook behind the queen. Objectively is more than a pawn worse than ; the cure is simply to leave the knight alone with or , and the engine gives White close to two pawns.
The pawn structure
No pawn structure, just one file. The trap is the h-file in front of White's king: the h-pawn is what keeps it closed, and the whole trick is persuading White to use that pawn to capture a knight.
The plans
♔ White’s plans
- Kick the knight with (still the best move), and then leave it on g4: and d4, or at once.
- Take on g4 only when the h-file cannot be used against you: count the black pieces that can reach it first.
- Win the centre while the g4-knight is out of play: Qa4 and Bxc6+ collect the e4-pawn back with interest.
♚ Black’s plans
- Know the price: is objectively poor. It is a trap for fast games against players who take everything.
- After , play , the hook, and leave the knight hanging.
- After , the f3-knight is attacked; after the queen threatens mate with the rook behind her.

Goal. Spring it as Black, and never fall for it as White.
- The bait and the hook: 4...Ng4 and 5...h5.
- The line: 6.hxg4? hxg4, and 7...Qh4 with the rook behind the queen.
- From White's chair: 6.c3! or 6.d4, and the knight stays on g4.
DrillDrill the trap as Black, then the sidestep as White. Then set up the position after 5...h5 and count the black pieces that could use an open h-file.Common mistakePlaying 4...Ng4 as a real move. Against 6.c3 Black is close to two pawns worse; the trap is the only reason to play it.Move on whenYou can explain in one sentence why taking the knight loses: it opens the h-file in front of your own king.
